Workplace Advice I Wish I Had Known

The article I chose to write about for my Wall Street Journal memo is a story written by a woman named Joann Lublin, who is writing advice to her younger self about the workforce.
Her first piece of advice was “discover unwritten workplace rules.” By this she means to understand the common rules of the office and make sure that they work for you. Her second tip was “find the door to the ‘old boys’ club.” She further explains that being casual friends with your male colleagues can open the doors to potential opportunities (unfortunately it is this way). Next, she says “deliberate carefully before making critical career decision.” By this she means think through bigger decisions slowly before making a conclusion. Her next piece of advice was “ask for the pay you deserve, but do your homework first”, and this basically means to let your supervisors come to you for a pay raise, unless you really do your research beforehand and it is a reasonable amount. Lastly, she advises to “remember the power of tact and discretion.” This ultimately means ask your employees for feedback to be the best manager possible.
This article is relevant because this information is important for anyone to know. Joann Lublin is writing from her own experience so it definitely trustworthy.

WSJ Memo

For this week’s Wall Street Journal Memo assignment, I chose an article that is extremely relatable in my life. Five years ago, you would not catch me dead wearing a shirt with the Adidas logo on it. Today, I will pay up to $100 for a sweatshirt with a huge Adidas logo right on the front. Gucci t-shirts, which are plain and white with the logo on the front, are costing over $100. You can buy look alike t-shirts online, but no one wants the fake one. Another big one is the Gucci belt with the huge Gucci design on the buckle. Over the past year or two, high-end designer brands are making just about anything with their logo on the front. Since when are graphic logo tees so desirable? Since celebrities and style influencers started wearing them.

I think that people want to wear expensive designer clothing with their logos on them because it has become a huge trend and fashion statement. As always, this article is relevant because I am pursuing a career in fashion, so I think it is important to stay updated with articles about the latest trends and hot topics.

I think that the author, Rory Satran, had to do a lot of secondary research before writing this article. Her primary research is herself and her experience with purchasing and desiring logo-plastered clothing.

Olympics Puts Spotlight on Korean Practice of Eating Dog Meat

This week, I chose to read something over the 2018 Olympics that are currently airing. The article is not so much about the Olympics, but uses the Olympics to draw attention to this terrible issue-the Korean practice of eating dog meat. As a vegetarian and a huge dog lover, this article stood out to me immediately. The idea of eating dog meat is cruel. I do think that eating other kinds of animals should not be tolerated, but especially dogs. Dogs are more like humans than they are animals. They have feelings, show compassion and love, and feel intense pain.

I think that this article is relevant because it should be a well-known issue, and this brings a lot of light to the situation. You do not have to be a dog lover to realize that eating dogs is wrong. With articles like this circling, it is possible that the world can make a big enough difference to put an end to the practice of eating dog meat.

The author, Min Sun Lee, had to have done a lot of primary and secondary research. She interviewed many different people at the Olympics, such as American freestyle skier, Gus Kenworthy. Kenworthy adopted a dog from a Korean dog farm to take home to America. The article goes into other extensive research about certain rituals and occasions for eating the dog meat. Under no circumstances should this be okay! I hope from this article that the practice of eating dog meat can end.

Sneaker Cleaning Secrets from the Pros

For this week's Wall Street Journal Memo assignment, I chose an article about cleaning sneakers. For such a random topic, it sparked my interest quite a bit. Sneakers nowadays are a true fashion statement. There are hundreds of styles and brands, way too many to keep up with, but no matter what sneakers you are wearing, the trend is to keep them looking fresh and clean. Like the author of the article, when I was younger, the first thing I did when I bought a new pair of shoes was to go outside and scuff them up. Now, I do the opposite- I do everything I can to ensure their cleanliness.

Michael Dougherty, the author of this article, has tested many different shoe cleaning products, but his reasoning for writing this article was to tell the public about the best shoe cleaning product, Jason Markk's essential kit. For $16, you can buy the liquid cleanser and a scrubber, which to me seems like a lot of money for shoe cleanser. Personally, I would just use some soap and water on a paper towel to get off any dirt or mud. He also mentioned Foot Locker's trusty shoe cleanser, but admitted that the Markk's one was better.

This article is not relevant at all in our class, but it is relevant in the PR world because it is keeping up with the new trend and it is publicizing different people and company's products. I think that Dougherty had to do a lot of primary and secondary research before writing this article. He had to try out products on himself, speak to friends about their preferences, and so on, but he also had to do some research online to find out pricing, customer reviews, and also find other products. Although I will not be purchasing the Markk's shoe cleanser, I was definitely fascinated by reading al about it and its success.

5 Black Icons Who Transformed Fashion- From Diana Ross to Rihanna

For this week's Wall Street Journal Memo assignment, I chose to read an article about fashion. Not only am I obsessed with fashion, I am obsessed with celebrity fashion. This article focuses on five major black celebrities who have made a major mark in the fashion industry. Each celebrity mentioned has their own unique style, which has made some sort of contribution to society.
First, they mentioned Diana Ross. the legendary singer is known for her big personality and style. Lots of glitter, big accessories and wild prints-just about anything to make her memorable. Then they went on to Kanye West. Kanye West has completely transformed fashion. His famous monochromatic style has now grown onto his family, who also rocks the monochromatic style. His fashion line is a true portrayal of his style, and society will never forget it. Next is Rihanna. Rihanna is not only ruling the world currently, but she is also killing the fashion game. Her recent success in her beauty line only made her more legendary in this industry. Her street style mixed with class is the perfect combination for her. I was not as familiar with the last two celebrities mentioned, but Pam Grier and Spike Lee were also featured in this story. They both had fashion styles that stood out in a crowd and have helped to make their  names remembered.
This article is relevant because it features celebrities who are very talked about today, and who also have styles that will be remembered forever. I always love reading different kind of articles based around fashion because it helps to teach me and it is also fun!
This story came out right before the famous Grammy's, where most of these celebrities mentioned can be seen walking down the red carpet in fabulous outfits. February is also Black History Month, which is a perfect time to celebrate these black fashion influencers. The author, Constance White, definitely had to do extensive research on each of these celebrities, as well as finding out who were the most fashion-related influential black celebrities.

Wall Street Journal Memo

                                                                              Donatella Versace’s 2020 Vision

For this week’s Wall Street Journal Memo assignment, I chose to read an article about Donatella Versace in honor of the

new series, The Assassination of Gianni Versace. This article focuses on the Versace Empire and how Donatella has been the roots of

the brand for two decades now. Donatella took over the brand after her brother, Gianni Versace was murdered, and she has just

reached the point of surpassing Gianni’s ownership. The story also focuses on Donatella’s style compared to Gianni’s, how she’s

kept his style alive, and how she’s made a legendary platform for herself. The biggest celebrities and models wear Versace designs,

for example Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Angelina Jolie, Emma Roberts plus more.

As for how this article is relevant to our class discussion? Well, it’s not. But it is relevant in current events and in the

media. Versace is a label that is desired among not only the biggest celebrities and supermodels, but also by our generation. Only a

small fraction of us can afford the brand, but we all at least dream about it.

I think that this story came out at the perfect time-right after the series about her brother was released. It brings more

attention to their family and the Versace brand. From a Public Relations research perspective, I think that the author of this story,

Joshua Levine, had to do a lot of fact checking and research about Donatella before writing. The story tells personal touches, such

as Donatella’s experience with rehab. It also goes into a lot of detail about the personal styles of each of the siblings, and how

Donatella has modernized her brother’s designs. Overall, I think that the Versace empire has earned its reputation and Donatella

Versace will continue reigning over the brand.
